Faculty Senate Online Meeting August 28, 2017

An online meeting of the CoBE Faculty Senate was called to vote on two motions. The motions were made by Kim Furumo and seconded by Jerry Calton. Descriptions and votes follow.

Motion 1: Develop a new course called ECON 417 Health Economics.

Acting Dean Tam Vu briefed us on this new course at the Aug 15, 2017 CoBE retreat. This will allow for collaboration with other units that offer programs in healthcare at UH Hilo.

Course Description: This course applies economic theory to examine the production of health. Issues such as asymmetric information, externalities, and indirect or third party payment are examined. The use of cost/benefit analysis, and reimbursement of expenses on healthcare organizations will be discussed.

The only changes are:

  1. To add ECON 417, Health Economics, to BBA-Economics and BBA-Healthcare Management.
  2. To drop ECON 380 in BBA-Economics.

Justification: to corroborate with other units that offer programs in healthcare at UH Hilo and ECON 380 had low enrollment (5 students) last year.

The motion passed with the following vote:
Yes = 8, No = 0, 1 = Abstain (Motion approved August 30, 2017)

Motion 2: Program Modification to the BBA - Economics and the BBA-Healthcare Management.

Add ECON 417 to the BBA - Economics and BBA - Healthcare Management programs. ECON 380 is low enrolled with five or fewer students each semester and will be archived.

For additional information refer to the Motion 1 write-up.
