As a General Business major you will be trained to organize, plan and manage. An endless number of career opportunities are available to individuals with a good business education. Business Administration graduates receive a strong foundation in business enterprise functions and are prepared to become managers in private and public sector organizations.

Upon graduating, Business Administration students should possess a common core of knowledge and skills that enables them to:

  • Demonstrate comprehension of the fundamental principles of essential business functions
  • Express ideas clearly, logically, and persuasively in written communication
  • Be able to identify, analyze, and decide on courses of action to resolve complex, unstructured problems, using appropriate tools and technology.

The program is also a good choice for students interested in starting their own business upon graduation, since entrepreneurship and small business organization is a primary focus of much of the coursework. Students may focus in specific areas such as finance, marketing, or information technology.

Each concentration consists of six (6) courses, as well as some unrestricted business electives. Each of the six concentration courses must be completed with a "C" or better.

In the third and fourth years of the program, students complete the Professional Business Core Requirements and selected Business Electives along with several general course electives.

Business Administration Minor

A minor in business administration is useful for anyone considering starting or participating in a business, and it allows those in other programs of study to develop business management skills and a solid foundation of organizational knowledge.

For initial enrollment in 300- or 400-level Business Administration courses, students pursuing a Business Administration minor must have:

Filed a formal declaration of intent to minor in Business Administration Completed 50 or more earned semester credit hours at the 100-level or higher Attained a cumulative grade point average of 2.50 or higher on work completed at UH Hilo Completed all course prerequisites for each upper-division class attempted

Business Administration Certificate

The College offers the Certificate in Business Administration to people who have already earned a baccalaureate degree in an area other than business. The certificate provides a formal credential testifying to their up-to-date business management skills and knowledge. It is especially useful to those already working in business or those intending to work in an organizational situation that would like to gain a well-balanced fundamental perspective on business.
